Stampe Vertongen SV-4 Trainer

These photos were sent by Carl Gootzen from Belgium. This is one very pretty basic trainer. Its lines kind of evoque those of the venerable DeHavilland Tigermoth.

These pictures were taken in Cleveland's National Air Show in 2002. I was really surprised not to see thousands of aviation enthusiasts around this big bird. This is an airworthy sample that later on during the day flew. The sound of its radial engine was music to my ears!

The folding wing design allowed to store several aircraft on board the cramped hangar decks on World War II aircraft carriers. Grumman's approach was very unique and was a characteristic in their lineage. The Hellcat, Wildcat and even the Hawkeye in more modern times.

Offensive armament consisted of bombs or torpedos and two .50 caliber machine guns one mounted in each wing. The bombardier was able to sight the bomb drop through a window in the rear bulkhead of the bombay. For torpedo attacks, the pilot aimed it through his sights. The picture shows a load of 12 100lb. bombs.

The Avenger's powerplant is a two row fourteen piston engine capable of generating over 1400HP. The U.S. Navy preferred air cooled radial engines over the liquid refrigerated counterparts. The U.S. Army Air Corps sleek fighters like the Mustang, Warhawks and Lightnings used in line Rolls Royce/Packard or Allison engines. Naval fighters and bombers of this era have this distinct look as their massive engines did not allow to have sleek cowlings. Nevertheless their appeal is unparalleled!

Defensive armament of the Avenger consisted of a .50 caliber machine gun mounted on a Sperry powered turret. This protected the upper rear and side cuadrants of the TBM. The bottom was equiped with a .30 caliber Browning machine gun mounted on a gondola like position. It as also referred as the "Stinger" gun mount.

This World War II era Torpedo Bomber is massive. It played a very vital role in many battles in the Pacific theatre of operations. President George Bush Sr. flew this type of aircraft during this conflict.

The following images were kindly supplied by Mr. Carl Gootzen, a Belgian modeler who came to my rescue with these magnificent detail photos. Mr. Gootzen does volunteer work at an aviation museum that is dedicated to preserve the SV-4 training biplanes of the Belgian forces. Other warbirds such as this Spitfire spend the winter in storage at the museum's facility. Mr. Gootzen's interest and kindness makes this fabulous hobby even better.

Mil gracias Carl!

In spite modern avionic and flight systems additions, the layout of the cockpit is pretty much as it was 60 years ago.
