Curtiss P - 40 Gallery
The Curtiss P-40 was a remarkable aircraft and gained its reputation over the skies of every continent during World War II. Althought outclassed by most adversaries this magnificent aeroplane soldiered on until the end of the war. American volunteer pilots (AVG) flew this aircraft against more modern adversaries over the skies of China and Burma. Their exploits became legendary. Under the command of Lt. Col. Claire Chenault the AGV or better known as the "Flying Tigers" gave the Japanese armed forces a very hard time. The British Royal Air Force flew this aircraft everywhere they engaged in combat. The campaign over the deserts of Northern Africa saw hundreds of the "Tomahawks" take part in some of the most bitter battles against the "Desert Fox", General Marshall Erwin Rommel and his "Afrika Korps". During the attack on Pearl Harbour many were destroyed on the ground, but a handful managed to take off and claimed seven japanase airplanes. Throughout the war this aeroplane saw many modifications and attempts to modernize it. Its rugged construction made it very durable in combat conditions. This was its main advantage over its adversaries.
Monogram's Classic P-40B Tomahawk in 1/48th scale
I built this classic Monogram kit straight out of the box. I did not have any fit problems and assembly went pretty smoothly. The cockpit always caught my eye in this kit. Although it is not a Tamiya or a Hasegawa for its time it was pretty well detailed. I always looked at this model as a point of departure for Monogram in making better detailed models and without "moving" parts.
Construi este modelo clásico de Monogram en 1/48 de escala sin añadir ningun juego de detallar. Lo arme tal cual viene en la caja. Lo unico que le agregue fueron los cinturones de seguridad de el piloto, los cuales los hize con tiras de cita para enmascarar y herraje de alambre muy fino, En mi opinión este kit fue para Monogram el punto de partida para hacer modelos mas detallados y sin tantas partes movibles. La cabina de el piloto para la epoca en que fue lanzado al mercado estaba muy bien detallada. Por supuesto que no se puede comparar con un modelo de Tamiya o Hasegawa, pero para ese entonces era el modelo mas detallado en el mercado. A pesar de su edad casi curenta años luce muy bien!
AMtech P-40E Warhawk in 1/48th scale
AMtech's P-40E is a kit based on the AMT/ERLT kits that were released during the 1990's. AMtech took the molds and released a version of the famed E model. The kit is not really a bad model, but compares very poorly to the new release by Hasegawa. I was very pleased with the decals offered by AMtech and the different versions you could build it in. I think I am going to use one of their version whenever I get to build my copy of the Hasegawa offering. This kit lacks detail in the landing gear and some in the cockpit, the canopy rails are missing and it comes with the wrong type of seat. I replaced the seat with an Ultracast resin replacement (I guess this saved this kit from ending in the scrap pile) The cockpit depth is appropiate, but the floor lacks detail. Sidepanels and the instrument panel are OK. Surface detail is finely engraved and crisp.
Este kit de AMtech esta basado en los modelos de el P-40 que la compañia AMT/ERLT lanzo al mercado durante los años de la decada de los noventa. AMtechadquirio los moldes e introdujo al mercado la variante E de este famoso avión de caza, la cual fue la que mas se produjo durante la segunda guerra mundial. AMtech altero en algo los moldes para asegurar autenticidad. No es un mal modelo, pero compara muy desfavorablemente al modelo de Hasegawa que fue lanzado hace poco al mercado. Me gusto mucho de el modelo de AMyech las calcomanias y la variedad de versiones provistas. Tanto que cuando tenga la oportunidad de construir el P-40E de Hasegawa, usare una de esas versiones. Al kit de AMtech le hace falta detalle en el tren de aterrizaje y la cabina. El piso de esta es muy poco detallado, pero la profundidad de la cabina es muy autentica, no como el P-40B de Trumpeter. El detalle de las paredes laterales asi como el de el panel de instrumentos es bueno. El detalle exterior es en lineas en bajo relieve y son muy finas y bien definidas.
The fit of this kit is pretty marginal. I had to chop the tail off to line it up properly with rest of the fuselage! The engine covers had to be shimmed with .010 plastic sheet to plug gaps (If I had not put so much work into aligning the tail... the scrap heap would be taller today!) Once that problem was solved, the cockpit's rear bulkhead came up short at the head rest. I made a new one of thicker plastic sheet.
El encaje de este kit deja mucho que desear. Me toco separar la cola para poder alinearla bien con el resto de el fuselage! Las tapas de el motor toco agregarles trocitos de lamina de plastico para rellenar grietas. (si no hubiese invertido tanto trabajo arreglando la cola... este modelo hubiese terminado en el desguazadero!) Una vez se soluciono ese problema, aparecio otro... el maparo posterior de la cabina es muy corto. Termine fabricando uno nuevo de lamina de poliestireno gruesa.
The main purpose of building this kit was to hone my antenna wire rigging skills and try a new technique. I made some "eyehooks" of very fine wire (34 gauge) and attached them with superglue to the holes I had drilled at the attachment points (4). then with a vynil plastic sprue I made a very thin filament by holding the sprue over a candle flame until soft. Once the sprue got hot enough I pulled at both ends. I made a very thin wire coil and cut it into small segments. I used these to represent the wire insulators.
El proposito de construir este aparato fue el de afinar mi habilidad y probar una nueva técnica para amarrar los cables de las antenas. Fabrique unas argollas diminutas con un alambre muy fino y delgado. Perfore cuatro agujeros muy pequeños en los puntos de amarre de las antenas y pegue con cianocrylato las argollas. Luego hize del mismo alambre un resorte bien apretado y lo corte en segmentos que utilize como aisladores del cable de la antena.
Mauve's 1/48th scale P-40N
This is the Mauve 1/48th scale kit. I added seat belts. The rest is as it came in the box. The seat is pretty thick for the scale, but the rest is very nicely done. I may say this is the best P-40N avaliable in 1/48th.
Este es el kit de Mauve, y se puede decir que es el mejor kit que hay en el mercado de el P-40N. El asiento es muy grueso para la escala. El kit esta armado tal como vino en la caja. Solo le agregue cinturones de seguridad
Curtiss P-40N in 1/48th scale by AMT/ERTL
The AMT/ERLT P-40N is a pretty good model. The level of detail is
pretty good for a 1/48th scale kit. The panel line and rivet detail is
engraved and very well done. The only areas of concern are the engine
cowling panels fit, which require shimming to get rid of resulting
gaps, as parts are not long enough.
The cockpit area is pretty well detailed. Side walls and instrument panel are raised detail very finely done. The seat is a bit thick, but can be made thinner very easily. Aftermarket seat belts will enhance the look of the cockpit a lot.
Este kit en 1/48 de escala de la casa AMT/ERLT es un muy buen modelo de este fascinante aeroplano. El detalle de los paneles y los remaches es en bajorelieve muy bien hecho. las unicas areas de preocupación son las tapas de el motor, las cuales son algo cortas y hay que agregar una tirilla de plastico para cubrir esta deficiencia.
El area de la cabina esta muy bien detallada para esta escala. Los lados de la cabina, el piso y el tablero de instrumentos son en altorelieve muy delicado y bien hecho. La silla de el piloto es algo gruesa, pero se puede adelgazar muy facilmente. Se puede mejorar mucho la apariencia de la cabina al agregarle los cinturones de seguridad al asiento.
